This new version is lighter, more powerful and can be operated without any assistance.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Since 2016 and with the participation of paraplegic Swiss athlete Silke Pan, researchers from the <a href=\"https:\/\/epfl.ch\/index.en.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EPFL<\/a>\u2019s Laboratoire de Syst\u00e8mes Robotiques (<a href=\"https:\/\/lsro.epfl.ch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LSRO<\/a>) have developed the <a href=\"http:\/\/twiice.ch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TWIICE<\/a> lower-limb exoskeleton. The team has created a robotic structure that can fully support the weight of a human body and guide the person\u2019s steps.<\/p>\n<p>TWIICE One has two electric motors on each leg that enable patients to move their hip and knee joints. The new design integrates actuators in the structure, making it less cumbersome and easier to manipulate. A control device in one of the crutches allows patients to choose among three walking speeds and go up and down stairs.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Two industrials partners on the project<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The LSRO team has worked in collaboration with two Vaud-based industrial partners on the TWIICE project. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sonceboz.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sonceboz<\/a> Innovation Cell has developed powerful yet ultra-compact actuators for moving the exoskeleton, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fischerconnectors.com\/switzerland-en\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fischer Connectors<\/a> has manufactured the high-performance connectors. \u201cThis project is particularly important to us because it can improve people\u2019s day-to-day lives.
