It includes wearables, data analytics, artificial intelligence, and virtual and augmented reality. The sector has grown considerably across sports such as football, basketball, cycling and golf, and technology has changed how athletes train, compete and recover from injuries, and how organizations are run.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A CHF 8 billion sector<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swissolympic.ch\/dam\/jcr:3a5ce897-5f90-4c2c-8251-9ba66503cc8d\/Swiss_Sports_Tech_Report_2026.18e63b327fec88ad558c7090c84834cf.pdf\">Swiss SportsTech Report<\/a>, commissioned by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swissolympic.ch\/\">Swiss Olympic<\/a> and published in October 2026, Switzerland counts 402 sports tech companies, nearly two-thirds of them start-ups or scale-ups. Together they generate an estimated CHF 8 billion in revenue and employ about 17,000 full-time equivalents. With about 45 companies per million inhabitants, Switzerland ranks among the top countries internationally, and the sector holds more than 4,600 active sport-related patents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Companies are active in all 26 cantons, but about half are concentrated in Zurich, Vaud and Bern. The report describes Vaud as a research-intensive cluster with many start-ups focused on medtech and wearables, anchored by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epfl.ch\/en\/\">EPFL<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unil.ch\/en\/home.html\">UNIL<\/a> and the sports bodies based in Lausanne. Bern is the industrial center, where 41% of firms manufacture equipment such as cycling, timing and nutrition products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looking ahead, 88% of the companies surveyed expect their revenue to rise over the next two years, and 43% earn more than half of their sport-related revenue outside Switzerland, since the domestic market is too small for most business models to reach scale. Read our <a href=\"https:\/\/ggba.swiss\/en\/first-swiss-sportstech-report-maps-a-chf-8-billion-sector-with-vaud-and-bern-among-its-main-hubs\/\">article on the report<\/a> for more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Home of international sport<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Switzerland hosts around 60 international sports federations, many of them in the canton of Vaud, including the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Lausanne. This concentration has earned the region the nickname &#8220;Silicon Valley of the world of sport.&#8221; According to the canton of Vaud, which cites a 2022 study by the International Academy of Sports Science and Technology (AISTS), international sport generates more than CHF 870 million in the canton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bearmind.tech\/\">Bearmind<\/a>, based in Lausanne, develops helmet-integrated sensors and software for real-time monitoring and prevention of brain injuries in sport. The EPFL spin-off <a href=\"https:\/\/ggba.swiss\/en\/lausannes-bearmind-wins-the-sport-category-at-the-2026-wipo-global-awards\/\">won the sport category at the 2026 WIPO Global Awards<\/a>, chosen among about 1,300 applications from 126 countries. In September 2025, it announced a strategic partnership with ice hockey manufacturer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bauer.com\/\">Bauer<\/a>, which approved Bearmind&#8217;s external sensors for its RE-AKT 155 helmet and plans a helmet with integrated Bearmind technology for the 2026-27 season. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csem.ch\/en\/\">CSEM<\/a>, in Neuch\u00e2tel, researches sensor technologies and non-invasive monitoring for health, wellbeing and sport. Other examples include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pomoca.com\/en\/\">Pomoca<\/a> in Chavornay, which makes ski touring skins used up to the Olympic Winter Games, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dartfish.com\/\">Dartfish<\/a> in Fribourg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the canton of Bern, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swatchgroup.com\/en\/companies-brands\/electronic-systems\/swiss-timing\">Swiss Timing<\/a> is based in Corg\u00e9mont. The Swatch Group&#8217;s sports timekeeping specialist provides timing and scoring, data handling and technologies such as live tracking, motion sensing and computer vision, and is present at every Olympic Games venue with Omega.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Networks that support innovation<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thinksport.org\/\">ThinkSport<\/a> is an international sports cluster created in 2016 by the City of Lausanne, the canton of Vaud, the Swiss Confederation and the IOC. It brings together sports organizations, companies and institutions to encourage dialogue, collaboration and innovation, with programs that include Sport Innovation Challenges, the Tech4sport Accelerator Programme and an incubator. Lausanne-based Aiving, which develops wearable technology and AI motion analysis for figure skating and sports performance, was one of the three winners of the <a href=\"https:\/\/tks-sic.agorize.com\/en\/challenges\/challenge-ai-robotics-2026\/pages\/results?lang=en\">Challenge AI &amp; Robotics 2026<\/a> on ThinkSport&#8217;s innovation platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In February 2026, the canton of Vaud launched the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vd.ch\/actualites\/actualite\/news\/26031-nouveau-defi-pour-les-projets-innovant-de-sporttech\">Olympic Capital Sport Innovation Challenge<\/a> with the Lausanne Capitale Olympique foundation and the Smart Move network, activated by ThinkSport. Open to start-ups, scale-ups, SMEs, international companies and sports organizations, it lets participants test, validate and deploy their innovations in real-world conditions in the Vaud ecosystem. In April 2026, the canton brought together about 50 players from international sport, business and research at the Maison du Sport International in Lausanne to build a partnership network among institutions, companies, start-ups and academia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesmartmove.ch\/\">Smart Move<\/a>, created in 2018, is an academic network that links nine institutions in the Lake Geneva region, including EPFL, UNIL and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unige.ch\/en\/\">University of Geneva<\/a>. It promotes interdisciplinary collaboration and gives partners a single point of entry to its sports expertise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With international sports federations, leading research institutions, a growing base of start-ups and networks that connect them, Western Switzerland offers sports tech companies a rare combination of expertise, partners and real-world testing grounds. As the Swiss SportsTech Report shows, the sector is already worth an estimated CHF 8 billion in Switzerland, and the region&#8217;s ecosystem is well placed to support its next stage of
