{"id":15323,"date":"2022-07-06T08:15:35","date_gmt":"2022-07-06T06:15:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ggba.swiss\/the-university-of-bern-to-improve-the-welfare-and-health-of-laying-hens\/"},"modified":"2023-07-04T13:40:37","modified_gmt":"2023-07-04T11:40:37","slug":"the-university-of-bern-to-improve-the-welfare-and-health-of-laying-hens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ggba.swiss\/en\/the-university-of-bern-to-improve-the-welfare-and-health-of-laying-hens\/","title":{"rendered":"The University of Bern to improve the welfare and health of laying hens"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tierschutz.vetsuisse.unibe.ch\/research\/center_for_proper_housing_poultry_and_rabbits_zthz\/hentrack_using_individual_movement_and_location_patterns_to_improve_the_genetic_selection_of_commercial_laying_hens\/index_eng.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HenTrack project<\/a> by Michael Toscano of the University of Bern&#8217;s Veterinary Public Health Institute (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vphi.ch\/index_eng.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VPHI<\/a>) and the leading suppliers of laying hen genetics, Lohmann Breeders in Germany and Hendrix Genetics in the Netherlands uses the latest findings from behavioral research on hens kept in cage-free housing with and without outdoor areas to incorporate them into breeding programs for laying hens.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.openphilanthropy.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Open Philanthropy<\/a>, a foundation based in California, supports initiatives to improve animal welfare with a focus on projects like HenTrack to cause large global changes and has a particular interest in promoting the transition away from cage housing systems for laying hens. As a result, Open Philanthropy is now supporting the HenTrack project with USD 2.7 million.<\/p>\n<p>The project will begin in 2023, last five years, and include four of the world&#8217;s most common high-performance hybrids, which lay particularly high numbers of eggs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Through this project, we want to find out which traits relate to the welfare and health of the animals in order to breed more robust and resistant chickens for cage-free housing while maintaining high performance in Switzerland and worldwide,&#8221; said Michael Toscano.<\/p>\n<h4>Healthier chickens for the world<\/h4>\n<p>The project is being carried out in an experimental barn used by the Center for Proper Housing of Poultry and Rabbits (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blv.admin.ch\/blv\/en\/home\/das-blv\/organisation\/organigramm\/tsch\/zentrum-tiergerechte-haltung-zollikofen.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ZTHZ<\/a>) in Zollikofen. ZTHZ is a joint research center of the Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blv.admin.ch\/blv\/en\/home.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FSVO<\/a>) and the VPHI of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unibe.ch\/index_eng.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Bern<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The HenTrack project will monitor the behavior, health and welfare of individual laying hens during the laying period in the ZTHZ\u2019s state-of-the-art, large-scale, cage-free research facilities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The fact that the joint HenTrack project is now being funded by Open Philanthropy is tantamount to an international award,&#8221; says David Spreng, Dean of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vetsuisse.unibe.ch\/index_eng.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vetsuisse Faculty<\/a> in Bern. &#8220;I am very happy about this big funding award.
