It\u2019s a big, complicated place, Europe \u2013 am I right that there are more than a dozen countries?\u00a0 Wait a sec\u2026 I can look that up\u2026 OMG, it\u2019s 45!!\u00a0 (I hope I won\u2019t be tested on this.)\u00a0 As a sophisticated globetrotter, I\u2019ve already visited some of these countries \u2013 England, Paris, Oktoberfest \u2013 but now I realize there are many,\u00a0many<\/em>\u00a0more nations than I imagined.\u00a0 This is going to make the choice even harder, I suppose, since all of them will no doubt be crying out for my profitable little business to choose it as its new European home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hmm, I can see this decision is going to be even tougher than I thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve started doing a little homework.\u00a0 Thank you,\u00a0Bill Gates<\/a>, for inventing the Internet!\u00a0 On that big beautiful WWW, I\u2019m finding some pretty impressive stuff.\u00a0 Like\u00a0this article<\/a>\u00a0about \u201cEurope\u2019s new tech start-up capital\u201d, or especially\u00a0this one<\/a>\u00a0about a cool new institute in\u00a0State of Geneve<\/a>. Really loving that \u201cQuantum\u201d connection, by the way \u2013 it\u2019s my company\u2019s middle name!\u00a0 I\u2019m sure we\u2019ll just naturally gravitate towards each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both of those articles happen to be about Switzerland.\u00a0 Never been there, but it\u2019s obvious I need to put it on my list.\u00a0 (Good thing I like cheese.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking of Switzerland, how on earth did such a small country get to speak so many languages?\u00a0\u00a0Interesting video<\/a>,\u00a0About Switzerland<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 thanks for sending it to me,\u00a0<\/strong>Serge Ballestraz<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But coming back to the need to do some homework.\u00a0 What a Godsend it is to have so much information at my fingertips, everything from GDP growth to yesterday\u2019s price for a gallon of gas!\u00a0 Which appears to be sold only in the metric system over there \u2013 I\u2019m definitely not too happy about needing to learn all that liters and meters stuff.\u00a0 (Idea: I\u2019ll get Bob, my Operations guy, to figure it out.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0United Nations<\/a>\u00a0looks like a pretty good source of info for comparing countries as potential sites for Jackson Quantum Ventures\u2019 new European HQ.\u00a0 But gosh, do they ever produce a\u00a0lot<\/em>\u00a0of data, though!\u00a0 Not sure how relevant it is to compare things like literacy rates or daily caloric intake, since my plan is to hire only well-fed people who already know how to read and write. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Frankly, I\u2019m getting bogged down in the sheer mass of details to sift through \u2013 all this reading, comparing and contrasting!\u00a0 It\u2019s just overwhelming.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And it\u2019s not just because there\u2019s a lot of country data out there.\u00a0\u00a0Of course<\/em>\u00a0there is, and I do need a lot of data.\u00a0 But there are so many other factors to take into consideration, too. \u00a0Things that might also affect my business, like regulations and #taxation\u2026 and things that could affect my employees, like schools and #healthcare and other quality of life issues. \u00a0(Which reminds me: Beauregard, my CFO, asked if we could prioritize countries where the food isn\u2019t too spicy.\u00a0 Good gosh, Beauregard, grow up!\u00a0 I\u2019m never going to promise\u00a0that<\/em>!)\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bottom line: I\u2019m worried.\u00a0 Even if I jotted down every indicator I can think of that I should be looking at, I\u2019m sure I\u2019ll still miss dozens more that are also important \u2013 but I just didn\u2019t think of them.\u00a0 And it\u2019s scary to imagine that the ones I can\u2019t think of might be the most important ones of all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
