Hello dear fans,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Well, as you will have seen from my last LinkedIn post from Germany<\/a>, I recently buzzed across the pond to make a rousing speech at a conference in Hamburg on empowering employees, a subject I know well.  As the two-time winner of the coveted \u201cEmpowo\u201d \u2013 known by us CEOs as the Oscar for Motivation in a Leadership Role \u2013 I was a clear choice to speak on my favorite subject, leading through skilled micromanaging.  Believe me, I\u2019ve got that down to an art form!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anyway, this quick trip gave me an opportunity to reflect more on my criteria for choosing a location for the European HQ of Jackson Quantum Ventures. I wrote about my \u201cTop Ten\u201d list last week.\u00a0 I realize now that I need to focus on the three things that are truly \u201cmake or break\u201d for this decision.\u00a0 They are, first, the\u00a0business environment<\/strong>\u00a0in our new European home. Second, the ease to find and hire highly qualified and\u00a0talented employees<\/strong>.\u00a0 And third,\u00a0quality of living<\/strong>.\u00a0 These three issues are really what it\u2019s all about!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Business environment<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

What will be quicker and easier, I wonder: recognizing the countries that offer a really positive environment to set up and grow in\u2026 or the countries that offer a negative<\/em> environment, and then strike them off the list?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are lots of stats I could look at.\u00a0 Just to give you one example, a country that loses a lot of days every year to strikes and labor unrest falls into the second category, wouldn\u2019t you agree?\u00a0 That\u2019s the way it strikes me, anyway \u2013 no pun intended.\u00a0 Don\u2019t want that!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the other hand, what\u00a0do<\/em>\u00a0I want?\u00a0 Solid infrastructure, for sure.\u00a0 A country that\u2019s run by pro-business politicians would also be nice, as opposed to bloodthirsty pirates keen to tax away every piaster I earn.\u00a0 An easy-to-navigate bureaucracy.\u00a0 A country that not only has regulations and institutions in place that foster innovation, but one where the population truly likes new stuff \u2013 because making new stuff is what we do. A country that applauds start-ups and is already chock full of entrepreneurs \u2013 that would be a good sign, too, eh?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are these things measurable?\u00a0 Some of them are, and they get amalgamated into rankings like international competitiveness reports. So in general, I\u2019ll be looking for a country that scores high on these lists.\u00a0 For example, in\u00a0the famous report from IMD<\/a>\u00a0Denmark and Switzerland have both been in the Top Three each of the past five years.\u00a0 Hard to beat that kind of record!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Talent<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

As you would surely agree, I will have no problem keeping my team motivated.\u00a0 I\u2019m practically famous for that!\u00a0 It\u2019s finding the folks who will join the team in the first place: that\u2019s the issue.\u00a0 Here in the US of A, my employees are graduates of excellent universities, mostly with technical or business degrees (or both), and when they join the company, they hit the ground running.\u00a0 Some of us will head over to Europe to get things going over there, but JQV is not simply going to be a team of Americans transplanted to foreign soil, no sir!\u00a0 We will be looking for locally grown talent, probably even from before Day 1.\u00a0 Will we find it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was mightily impressed to discover last week that Switzerland scored at the\u00a0very top of the chart in terms of talent competitiveness<\/a>.\u00a0 And not just in one ranking, but in\u00a0two separate ones<\/a>! \u00a0How the heck did they manage that??\u00a0 I guess 200 years of watchmaking turns your country into a hotbed of hard work, precision, and innovation.\u00a0 That\u2019s my theory anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quality of living<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s the point of successfully building up the company over in Europe, if living there is just one damn struggle after another?\u00a0 If you\u2019re unhappy when I let you leave the office at 9 pm?\u00a0 If you can\u2019t get a decent cheeseburger or find a good barber?\u00a0 If walking down the street, you fear for your life \u2013 or at least your wallet?\u00a0 If you choke on the polluted air or mistrust the healthcare system?\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to have to fly back to America every time I need to get my appendix removed!\u00a0 Know what I mean?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This index<\/a>\u00a0is useful.\u00a0 All the top countries scored by liveability are in Europe.\u00a0 Except Oman, that\u2019s a surprise.\u00a0 I\u2019m sure they\u2019re all very nice places \u2013 but I can\u2019t help noticing that some of them probably sport some pretty cold climates if I\u2019m being honest.\u00a0 Norma\u2019s a bit of a sun worshiper. I don\u2019t know how well it would sit with her if I announced we were moving to Lapland\u2026\u00a0 Needs some thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What now?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m making great progress narrowing the choice down now, quite a lot! \u00a0I may even be in a position to share my decision with you next week.\u00a0 This is exciting!\u00a0 Stay tuned!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
