{"id":22672,"date":"2024-02-14T16:48:28","date_gmt":"2024-02-14T15:48:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ggba.swiss\/?p=22672"},"modified":"2024-02-19T08:11:39","modified_gmt":"2024-02-19T07:11:39","slug":"jimmy-jackson-blog-9","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ggba.swiss\/en\/jimmy-jackson-blog-9\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Ask Jimmy&#8221; Part 2: Getting around in Switzerland"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p id=\"ember453\">Can you spot my mistake?&nbsp; One of my more alert followers made the point that I don\u2019t need to talk about air transport since it doesn\u2019t play a major role within the country.&nbsp; By golly, I guess that would be right.&nbsp; In my country, the US of A, nobody would take a plane to go from Peoria to Moline, so I imagine in Switzerland it\u2019s the same.&nbsp; If you\u2019re in Zug and you need to go to Niederbipp, you\u2019re probably not going to get there on Lufthansa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember454\">I should have worded that a little differently so as to include \u201cto\u201d Switzerland and \u201cfrom\u201d Switzerland, which would allow me to talk about planes.&nbsp; You see, other than eating a big slice of Norma\u2019s delicious pumpkin pie, my favorite thing in the world is looking out the window from 35,000 feet in the air, and I can only imagine how breathtaking it must be to fly to, from, or in Switzerland and look out over all those beautiful mountains, lakes, glaciers, meadows, towns\u2026 and so on.&nbsp; (I believe individual cows cannot be spotted from that altitude.)&nbsp; That day when I get on a big silver bird and fly to Switzerland is coming soon!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember455\">So now that I\u2019ve admitted my error, let me address your questions concerning transportation in Switzerland.&nbsp; Here we go:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember456\"><strong>Dear Jimmy,<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember457\">In Switzerland, would you say that skiing is considered more a sport or a means of transportation?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember458\">Signed,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember459\">Dider C.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember461\"><strong>Dear DC,<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember462\">Why does it have to be one thing OR the other? So many people were leaving for vacation at the same time that the cars were lined up for miles.&nbsp; How is this possible when Switzerland has such a great reputation for efficiency?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember474\">Signed,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember475\">Couch Potato, Netherlands<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember477\"><strong>Dear Couch,<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember478\">It all depends on your definition of \u201cefficiency,\u201d doesn\u2019t it?&nbsp; Considering that the people in these cars were stuck for quite some time, the local inhabitants set up impromptu yodeling classes for them, which is just about the most efficient thing I have ever heard of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember479\">But if you want to avoid this risk, you can put your car on the train in Switzerland! What is that? It doesn\u2019t seem to have anything to do with GTA, GPA, GDP, or G&amp;T.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember497\">Signed,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember498\">Mr. Acronym<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember500\"><strong>Dear Acro,<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember501\">A quick search reveals that \u201cGA\u201d stands for a \u201cGeneral Abonnement\u201d which you can buy from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/sbb\/\">SBB CFF FFS<\/a>. It\u2019s basically a pass that is valid for every train, every bus, every tram, every boat, and possibly every horse (though I am still researching this) in Switzerland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember502\">You can get one in first class or second class, and you can get one for a year or a month. There are also different price levels for kids, adults, seniors,\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember503\">This looks to me like the deal of a lifetime. If you get one of these and also download the CFF app which will tell you how to get from A to B right now, or at any future time you want, you may have to do a little bit of rearranging in your schedule, but you\u2019re basically getting a chauffeur that you don\u2019t need to feed and clothe.
