This expansion brings the total number of chairs to ten and will solidify the campus as a center of excellence in the built environment, energy, and climate research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new research chairs will be housed in the forthcoming Smart Living Lab (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smartlivinglab.ch\/en\/\">SLL<\/a>), an experimental building within the <a href=\"https:\/\/bluefactory.ch\/en\/home\/\">bluefactory<\/a> innovation district. Construction of the SLL will begin in 2025, with the facility expected to open in 2027. Designed as a full-scale testing ground, the SLL will integrate cutting-edge energy-efficiency and sustainability technologies, developed collaboratively by EPFL, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heia-fr.ch\/en\/\">HEIA School of Engineering and Architecture<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unifr.ch\/home\/en\/\">University of Fribourg<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Smart Living Lab (What Is Series)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Rp_D_JwzRB0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This initiative aligns with the goals of EPFL\u2019s recently launched Centre for Worldwide Sustainable Construction (<a href=\"https:\/\/cwsc.epfl.ch\/\">CWSC<\/a>), which operates across the Lausanne and Fribourg campuses. The CWSC promotes innovative construction methods and sustainable materials, aiming to advance global practices within the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Transforming Fribourg\u2019s economic and research landscape<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The addition of six research chairs will expand the campus\u2019s workforce to between 130 and 160 by 2030. Each chair will be led by a professor heading a dedicated research group, fostering deeper collaboration among EPFL, HEIA, and the University of Fribourg. This interdisciplinary approach will bolster the region&#8217;s innovation capacity and drive economic benefits for local businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The SLL itself will exemplify sustainable construction, incorporating resource-efficient designs, a digital twin, and advanced monitoring systems. It will contribute directly to Switzerland&#8217;s 2050 energy objectives and serve as <a href=\"https:\/\/ggba.swiss\/en\/shaping-the-future-built-environment-at-the-smart-living-lab\/\">a model for
