These specialized qubits, which store and process information according to the principles of quantum mechanics, are known for their robustness against interference\u2014an essential characteristic for reliable quantum computation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A key focus of the center is the use of superconducting materials, which allow electricity to flow without resistance, minimizing energy loss. By integrating these materials with molecular structures, researchers aim to develop more stable and efficient qubits than current technologies permit. The concept of topological protection\u2014where the qubits&#8217; structure inherently shields them from external disturbances\u2014plays a crucial role in maintaining computational accuracy over extended operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur aim is to realize superconducting qubits using topological superconductors for the first time,\u201d explained Professor Ernst Meyer, Director of the WSS Research Center and Professor of Physics at the University of Basel. \u201cWe are not simply refining existing technology but taking a fundamentally new approach that combines physics, chemistry, and interdisciplinary research.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research center will synthesize molecules with precise properties designed to coat superconductors and facilitate qubit formation. Through electromagnetic field manipulation, these qubits will interact and execute logical operations. Additionally, experiments at extremely low temperatures will help researchers understand the molecular binding properties of superconductors, enhancing their stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stable qubits for next-generation quantum computing<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>With a long-term vision of scaling quantum computing technology, the center aims to reduce computational errors and enable quantum processors at the nanometer scale. These advancements could support applications such as climate modeling, medical simulations, and energy-efficient information processing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project brings together expertise from the University of Basel, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unibe.ch\/index_eng.html\">University of Bern<\/a>, and the University of Salzburg.
