Kari Voutilainen came to Switzerland from Finland in 1988, at a moment when mechanical watchmaking was, in his words, endangered completely. Factories were closing, unemployment in the valleys was high, and work permits were nearly impossible to obtain. He came anyway, drawn by something a quartz movement could never offer: a mechanical watch, he says, has a soul. Today his workshops above Fleurier produce fewer than a hundred watches a year, sought after by collectors around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He explains why he chose to make almost every component in-house, from wheels and pinions to dials and cases, through a constellation of satellite companies, and why that choice was as much about preserving disappearing skills as about controlling quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
