L’immunoth\u00e9rapie, qui vise \u00e0 dynamiser le syst\u00e8me immunitaire du patient, repr\u00e9sente un traitement tr\u00e8s efficace pour certains cancers. Pourtant dans deux tiers des cas, il n\u2019a aucun effet en raison d\u2019un \u00e9puisement des lymphocytes T, principaux acteurs dans le combat contre les cellules canc\u00e9reuses. L\u2019une des pistes suivies par les scientifiques pour am\u00e9liorer ce taux d\u2019efficacit\u00e9 est la mise au point de \u00ab boosters \u00bb qui donnent une seconde jeunesse aux lymphocytes fatigu\u00e9s. Leman Biotech, une spin-off de l\u2019EPFL<\/a>, teste une prot\u00e9ine-booster prometteuse.<\/p>\n

Les chercheurs de la start-up ont test\u00e9 cette prot\u00e9ine-booster, dont l\u2019efficacit\u00e9 sur les souris est proche des 90%. \u00ab Ces derniers mois, nous avons men\u00e9 des \u00e9tudes pr\u00e9cliniques sur plusieurs types de tumeurs humaines greff\u00e9es sur des mod\u00e8les animaux. Les r\u00e9sultats sont toujours aussi encourageants et les souris ont ensuite une long\u00e9vit\u00e9 normale \u00bb, explique Li Tang, Professeur \u00e0 l\u2019EPFL et cofondateur de Leman Biotech.<\/p>\n

La start-up vient de clore une premi\u00e8re lev\u00e9e de fonds de USD 11 millions. La prochaine \u00e9tape consistera \u00e0 terminer les essais pr\u00e9cliniques, puis \u00e0 passer \u00e0 la phase clinique, ce que la start-up esp\u00e8re faire d’ici deux ans.<\/p>\n

\u00ab Pour un premier tour de financement, USD 11 millions est une somme importante \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Natalia Giovannini pour l’Office de Transfert de Technologie (TTO<\/a>) de l’EPFL. \u00ab Le succ\u00e8s de Leman Biotech \u00e0 attirer des capitaux refl\u00e8te l’int\u00e9r\u00eat consid\u00e9rable que suscite son innovation. \u00bb<\/p>\n

La start-up utilisera le financement pour d\u00e9velopper rapidement ses activit\u00e9s. \u00ab Nous avons d\u2019ores et d\u00e9j\u00e0 ouvert deux laboratoires.
