Sous l&rsquo;impulsion de Karen Scrivener, directrice du laboratoire, cette innovation pourrait r\u00e9duire de mani\u00e8re significative l&rsquo;impact environnemental de la production de b\u00e9ton, traditionnellement connue pour son empreinte carbone \u00e9lev\u00e9e.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Le b\u00e9ton, mat\u00e9riau de construction essentiel \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e9chelle mondiale, est produit \u00e0 raison de quatre tonnes par an pour chaque habitant de la plan\u00e8te. Le principal d\u00e9fi r\u00e9side dans le ciment, et plus pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment dans le clinker, son principal ingr\u00e9dient, qui contribue \u00e0 lui seul \u00e0 90 % des \u00e9missions de carbone du ciment. Le ciment LC3 (Limestone Calcined Clay Cement) se pr\u00e9sente comme une solution r\u00e9volutionnaire, rempla\u00e7ant la moiti\u00e9 du clinker par de l&rsquo;argile calcin\u00e9e et du calcaire broy\u00e9. Ces mat\u00e9riaux, contrairement au clinker, ne lib\u00e8rent pas de carbone lorsqu&rsquo;ils sont chauff\u00e9s, et leur temp\u00e9rature de chauffage plus basse permet d&rsquo;utiliser des sources d&rsquo;\u00e9nergie plus respectueuses de l&rsquo;environnement, comme l&rsquo;\u00e9lectricit\u00e9. Cette nouvelle approche permet de r\u00e9duire les \u00e9missions de CO2 d&rsquo;environ 40 % par rapport au ciment traditionnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Au-del\u00e0 de ses avantages environnementaux, le LC3 am\u00e9liore la durabilit\u00e9 du b\u00e9ton, en particulier contre l&rsquo;eau et le sel, prolongeant ainsi la dur\u00e9e de vie des routes et des ponts. Son faible co\u00fbt de production et l&rsquo;utilisation d&rsquo;argile largement disponible en font une alternative \u00e9conomiquement viable, permettant de r\u00e9aliser jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 25 % d&rsquo;\u00e9conomies par rapport au ciment traditionnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La croissance rapide et l&rsquo;adoption du LC3 dans le monde entier t\u00e9moignent de son potentiel \u00e0 r\u00e9volutionner l&rsquo;industrie du ciment. Des g\u00e9ants du ciment tels que Holcim et Argos Cementos int\u00e8grent d\u00e9j\u00e0 le LC3 dans leur production, avec d&rsquo;importantes \u00e9conomies de CO2 \u00e0 la cl\u00e9. Son \u00e9volutivit\u00e9 indique qu&rsquo;il pourrait permettre d&rsquo;\u00e9viter jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 500 millions de tonnes d&rsquo;\u00e9missions de CO2 d&rsquo;ici \u00e0 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Un impact significatif dans les pays en d\u00e9veloppement<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>L&rsquo;impact le plus important de la LC3 pourrait se faire sentir dans les pays en d\u00e9veloppement, en particulier en Afrique, o\u00f9 la croissance rapide de la population et les ressources limit\u00e9es en clinker posent probl\u00e8me. L&rsquo;utilisation d&rsquo;argiles d&rsquo;origine locale dans la LC3 pourrait permettre \u00e0 ces r\u00e9gions de disposer de solutions de construction durables et abordables, en encourageant les industries locales et en r\u00e9duisant la d\u00e9pendance \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e9gard des importations de clinker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La recherche de l&rsquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epfl.ch\/fr\/\">EPFL<\/a> s&rsquo;\u00e9tend au-del\u00e0 du LC3, en \u00e9tudiant les moyens d&rsquo;optimiser l&rsquo;ensemble de la cha\u00eene de valeur du b\u00e9ton dans une optique de d\u00e9veloppement durable. Les strat\u00e9gies comprennent l&rsquo;am\u00e9lioration de l&rsquo;efficacit\u00e9 \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique des usines, l&rsquo;utilisation de carburants alternatifs, l&rsquo;optimisation de la s\u00e9lection des agr\u00e9gats et l&rsquo;am\u00e9lioration de l&rsquo;efficacit\u00e9 de la conception et de l&rsquo;utilisation du b\u00e9ton. Combin\u00e9es, ces approches pourraient permettre de r\u00e9duire de 80 % les \u00e9missions provenant du ciment et du b\u00e9ton avec les technologies
