D\u00e9velopp\u00e9s par le groupe <a href=\"https:\/\/aimm.epfl.ch\">Artificial Intelligence in Molecular Medicine<\/a> dirig\u00e9 par Charlotte Bunne, au sein des Facult\u00e9s d&rsquo;informatique et communications et des sciences de la vie de l&rsquo;EPFL, ces travaux ont \u00e9t\u00e9 publi\u00e9s dans la revue Nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Une tumeur ne se r\u00e9sume pas \u00e0 ses cellules canc\u00e9reuses : les cellules immunitaires, les vaisseaux sanguins et les tissus environnants influencent la fa\u00e7on dont un cancer se d\u00e9veloppe et r\u00e9pond au traitement, et deux tumeurs compos\u00e9es des m\u00eames types de cellules peuvent r\u00e9agir tr\u00e8s diff\u00e9remment selon l&rsquo;agencement de celles-ci. La prot\u00e9omique spatiale capture cette organisation au niveau mol\u00e9culaire, mais les donn\u00e9es qui en r\u00e9sultent sont difficiles \u00e0 interpr\u00e9ter et \u00e0 comparer d&rsquo;une \u00e9tude \u00e0 l&rsquo;autre. VirTues apprend \u00e0 partir de donn\u00e9es de prot\u00e9omique spatiale issues de multiples \u00e9tudes et types de cancers, permettant une analyse allant de la cellule individuelle aux coupes de tissu enti\u00e8res et jusqu&rsquo;au devenir des patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">L&rsquo;\u00e9quipe a r\u00e9alis\u00e9 deux avanc\u00e9es centrales. Elle a constitu\u00e9 ce qu&rsquo;elle pr\u00e9sente comme le plus grand jeu de donn\u00e9es ouvert de mesures de prot\u00e9omique spatiale \u00e0 ce jour, comprenant plus de 12&rsquo;000 images provenant de plus de 5&rsquo;000 patients r\u00e9partis dans 31 cohortes cliniques. Elle a \u00e9galement d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 une nouvelle architecture Transformer permettant au mod\u00e8le d&rsquo;apprendre \u00e0 partir de donn\u00e9es de prot\u00e9omique spatiale issues d&rsquo;\u00e9tudes diff\u00e9rentes, m\u00eame lorsque les ensembles de prot\u00e9ines mesur\u00e9es varient. Suivant la logique des mod\u00e8les fondationnels utilis\u00e9s pour le langage, VirTues est entra\u00een\u00e9 de mani\u00e8re large plut\u00f4t que pour une t\u00e2che unique pr\u00e9d\u00e9finie, en apprenant les relations entre prot\u00e9ines, cellules et leur contexte spatial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ces travaux ont associ\u00e9 des contributeurs de l&rsquo;Universit\u00e9 de Zurich, de l&rsquo;H\u00f4pital universitaire de Zurich, de l&rsquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unige.ch\/\">Universit\u00e9 de Gen\u00e8ve<\/a> et des <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hug.ch\/\">H\u00f4pitaux universitaires de Gen\u00e8ve<\/a> (HUG), o\u00f9 Olivier Michielin, responsable de l&rsquo;oncologie de pr\u00e9cision, voit dans l&rsquo;int\u00e9gration du mod\u00e8le aux tumor boards d&rsquo;oncologie de pr\u00e9cision locaux et nationaux une prochaine \u00e9tape naturelle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VirTues s&rsquo;inscrit dans un projet de cinq ans intitul\u00e9 Virtual Patient Labs: AI-Driven Simulation and Diagnostics for Precision Oncology, pour lequel Charlotte Bunne a re\u00e7u le prix Lopez-Loreta 2026. Le projet vise \u00e0 construire un mod\u00e8le computationnel de la biologie d&rsquo;un patient donn\u00e9, en combinant la composante tissulaire \u00e0 la pathologie de routine, aux informations
