GlobalM’s cloud-based SRT distribution platform allowed BBC Studios to distribute the Queen’s funeral to global audiences.

Founded in 2019, GlobalM provides an SRT-based digital network to distribute live events to rights-holding broadcasters, production partners and sponsors. Its media platform which turns smartphones into broadcast cameras is based on an advanced secure video streaming network and fulfils the demand for high-quality, low-latency live or file-based video delivery over the internet.

Hundreds of millions of people followed the State Funeral of HM Queen Elizabeth II worldwide. BBC Studios, the commercial arm of the BBC, streamed the event using Geneva-based start-up GlobalM’s cloud-based SRT distribution platform.

The partnership with BBC studios demonstrated just how this technology can is transforming the broadcasting industry. The BBC televised the Queen’s funeral across the U.K. through its BBC One broadcast television network. However, BBC Studios required a cloud-based media distribution workflow to deliver live feeds to its international rights holders with limited or non-existent satellite links.

One of the biggest events in broadcasting history

The BBC used the GlobalM network and Matrox Monarch EDGE encoder technologies, providing them with an easy-to-use, easy-to-setup solution to launch a same-day, cost-effective, IP-based distribution workflow.

As a result, global BBC audiences got access to 12 hours of high-quality, interruption-free event coverage. In the UK alone, around 22.4 million people watched The State Funeral of HM Queen Elizabeth II across all BBC channels, excluding those watching live, on mobile devices, or on catch-up.

“GlobalM and Matrox Video are honored to have been entrusted to support arguably one of the biggest events in broadcasting history,” said Paul Calleja, CTO and co-founder of GlobalM. “Matrox Monarch EDGE’s high-quality and low-latency encoding support on the GlobalM private IP backbone provided BBC Studios with complete stability and quality for each stream, ensuring international rights holders near and far with exceptional event coverage.”
