ENGIE New Ventures takes a strategic stake in Yverdon-based ExerGo to scale its CO₂-based district heating and cooling technology.

ENGIE, through its ENGIE New Ventures investment fund, has acquired a strategic stake in start-up ExerGo, alongside existing investor EREN Group, to accelerate the deployment of its CO₂-based district heating and cooling technology.

Founded in 2018 and based in Yverdon (canton of Vaud), ExerGo has developed a closed-loop thermal network system in which CO₂ replaces water as the energy carrier. This approach enables the transport of heat and cold at low temperatures through smaller, lighter and more flexible pipes, significantly reducing installation footprint and civil engineering works in dense urban environments.

The investment aligns with ENGIE’s Local Energy Infrastructure strategy, which focuses on compact, efficient and renewable-compatible solutions. By supporting ExerGo’s industrialization and market expansion, ENGIE aims to strengthen its offering to municipalities, utilities and real estate developers seeking to decarbonize heating and cooling infrastructure.

ExerGo’s technology is designed to optimize the use of waste heat and local renewable resources, including surface water and shallow geothermal energy. Compared to conventional water-based networks, its CO₂ system can reduce installation costs and improve thermal performance. The company has already demonstrated its solution through a pilot plant in Sion and a major project with Groupe E in Fribourg.
