Multiwave Technologies has embarked on a EUR 1.1 million partnership with Aix-Marseille University, focusing on advancing portable MRI technology with applications in brain and musculoskeletal imaging.

Multiwave Technologies, a Geneva-based deeptech start-up known for its groundbreaking work in medical imaging and its commitment to making MRI technology accessible worldwide, has recently entered a strategic research partnership with Aix-Marseille University. Following close on the heels of announcing the commercialization of its portable MRI device for brain imaging, this new venture with Aix-Marseille University underscores Multiwave’s momentum in the medical technology sector.

The partnership envisages joint research efforts and the deployment of five portable MRI units across medical and sports laboratories at Aix-Marseille University campuses. Over a four-year period (2024-2027), these units will lead research in cerebral and musculoskeletal applications. The research program will be led by the Institut Fresnel, a collaboration between Aix-Marseille University and the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), with additional support from the “Centre d’imagerie par résonance magnétique pour la biologie et la médecine.”

Panos Antonakakis, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Multiwave Technologies, highlighted the partnership’s potential: “This partnership combines expertise in metamaterials, AI, MRI methodology, and clinical protocols to push the boundaries of ultra-low field MRI.” This collaboration not only exemplifies Multiwave’s innovative approach to leveraging AI and metamaterials in developing its ultra-portable MRI apparatus but also signals a significant advancement in medical diagnostics.

Nurtured by the incubator Fongit, Multiwave Technologies has set ambitious goals to democratize MRI technology globally, addressing the stark disparity in medical imaging accessibility. Through this partnership, Multiwave and Aix-Marseille University are pioneering advances in MRI technology, promising a future where advanced diagnostics are within reach of communities worldwide, from developed nations to remote regions.
