SurfAce Cleantech raises CHF 250,000 to advance its compostable coating technology

SurfAce Cleantech, a deep-tech start-up based at EPFL Innovation Park, has closed a CHF 250,000 pre-seed round to bring its coating technology for compostable flexible packaging toward industrialization and certification.

SurfAce Cleantech, a deep-tech start-up developing a patent-pending coating technology for compostable flexible packaging, has closed a CHF 250,000 pre-seed financing round. The round was backed by Swiss business angels, including an investor from the SICTIC network, and by the Stiftung HSG START Accelerator.

Based at the EPFL Innovation Park and developed in collaboration with EPFL, the company’s technology combines materials science with industrial printing processes to reinforce compostable films. The aim is to enable packaging that is thinner, stronger and more cost-competitive while remaining compostable, addressing one of the barriers to wider adoption of compostable materials.

The financing will support the next stage of industrial development and expand the team from three to five people. Priorities include optimizing strategic pattern and zone printing, refining mechanical reinforcement criteria, conducting further industrial-scale trials and advancing compostability certification, with the objective of reaching market readiness in the first quarter of 2027.
