IonQ acquires ID Quantique to advance global quantum networking
4 March 2025

Geneva-based ID Quantique, a pioneer in quantum-safe cryptography, joins forces with US-based IonQ to accelerate the development of next-generation quantum networks.
IonQ, a leading quantum computing company based in Maryland, has reached an agreement to acquire a majority stake in ID Quantique (IDQ), the Geneva-based global leader in quantum-safe networking and quantum detection systems. The acquisition strengthens IDQ’s position in the industry while enabling both companies to build the world’s largest quantum-safe networks and advance the development of quantum networking technology.
Founded in 2001 as a spin-off of the University of Geneva, ID Quantique has established itself as a global reference in quantum-safe cryptography and quantum key distribution (QKD). Its quantum-safe network solutions are widely used by governments, financial institutions, and industrial players across more than 60 countries. In addition, IDQ’s quantum random number generators and quantum detection systems are essential for securing communications in the quantum era. The company operates globally, with offices in South Korea, Austria, and the United States.
The acquisition is part of a broader strategic partnership involving SK Group, South Korea’s leading ICT company, which has also entered into an agreement with IonQ to strengthen global quantum networking. This partnership aims to accelerate the commercialization of quantum-secure communications, particularly in the US market, by leveraging IonQ’s photonic interconnects to create scalable quantum clusters.
Quantum computing is widely regarded as one of the most transformative technologies of the 21st century, with applications spanning defense, finance, energy, and cybersecurity. As quantum networks emerge as the backbone of the future quantum internet, ID Quantique’s expertise in secure communications will be key to ensuring the integrity of quantum information exchanges.
“This strategic transaction and the expertise of ID Quantique take IonQ to the forefront of quantum networking commercialization and cement our role as a global leader in next-generation secure communications,” said Peter Chapman, Executive Chairman of IonQ. “Once finalized, we expect that our intended strategic partnership with SK Telecom, one of the most powerful technology companies in Asia, will significantly enhance the distribution of IonQ quantum technology, leading to many commercial and technical opportunities.”
The transaction is expected to close in the second quarter of 2025, pending regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions.
