Bern-based legal-i has been named the Microsoft Switzerland Startup of the Year for its groundbreaking medical case intelligence solution, significantly boosting efficiency and accuracy for insurers and hospitals.

legal-i, a Bernese insurtech start-up, provides AI-powered software that transforms medical records into interactive patient histories. This solution helps insurance companies and hospitals process and evaluate medical cases more efficiently by providing insights into previous diagnoses and similar cases, leading to faster and fairer case handling.

Since its launch in 2023, legal-i has been adopted by major insurers such as Baloise, Mobiliar and Dextra Rechtsschutz AG, with customers reporting up to 84% faster processing and 40% more accuracy. The platform’s benefits extend to various types of insurance, including accident, disability, life and liability insurance, as well as daily sickness leave.

The start-up has received support from business angels such as Jürg Schwarzenbach and Joachim Masur, as well as grants from Innosuisse Startup Innovation. These contributions have enabled legal-i to generate the necessary revenue to support its activities. As a participant in the Microsoft for Startups Switzerland program since May 2023, legal-i has benefited from technical and business support, including up to USD 150,000 in Microsoft Azure credits. The program provides development and productivity tools, as well as mentorship from technical and business leaders to help startups improve their solutions. The program is open to start-ups at any stage and supports them from ideation to scale-ups.

Achim Kohli, CEO and Co-Founder of legal-i, expressed pride in the award: “This recognition by Microsoft highlights our dedication to innovation and excellence in creating relevant solutions.” The legal-i team, comprising 11 people, includes CTO Markus Baumgartner and AI specialist Prof. Erik Graf.

The Microsoft Switzerland Startup of the Year Award was presented at the Microsoft Switzerland Partner event. Alongside legal-i, Decentriq, a provider of data clean rooms, won the Partner Innovation award in the ISV Innovation category.
