Neuchâtel is strengthening its position in the semiconductor industry with a CHF 3 million investment in CSEM’s MEMS manufacturing line.

The canton of Neuchâtel is reinforcing its semiconductor industry by granting CHF 3 million to CSEM to modernize its MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) production line. This strategic investment aligns with international semiconductor initiatives, such as the U.S. Chip Act and the European Chip Act, aiming to enhance local semiconductor production capabilities and ensure Switzerland remains competitive in a high-tech global landscape.

Semiconductors play a vital role in digitalized industries, powering everything from computers and smartphones to medical devices and connected objects. By supporting CSEM’s innovation efforts, the canton ensures that Neuchâtel remains a hub for high-value semiconductor research, prototyping, and small-scale production. The MEMS fabrication line at CSEM is fundamental to developing advanced microsystems, serving local and international markets with sensor, actuator, and microelectronic solutions.

A key step for industrial competitiveness

The investment will enable CSEM to upgrade its infrastructure, aligning with new industry standards and increasing its ability to support technological innovation. This initiative is particularly significant given that Switzerland remains excluded from programs like Digital Europe, which funds semiconductor advancements in the EU. By modernizing its facilities, CSEM will strengthen Neuchâtel’s industrial competitiveness, attract new partnerships, and ensure continued international collaborations.

The canton is home to a thriving semiconductor ecosystem, with multiple companies specializing in sensor technology, microsystems, and advanced electronics. CSEM, a leader in applied research and technology transfer, plays a crucial role in supporting Swiss innovation and ensuring that Neuchâtel remains at the forefront of high-tech industries.

CSEM: A pillar of innovation in Neuchâtel

MEMS technology combines electronic and mechanical components on a single chip, enabling their integration into automotive sensors, medical devices, smartwatches, and industrial equipment. Their small size and energy efficiency make them essential for the future of miniaturized electronics. With Europe’s only dedicated MEMS development platform, CSEM is uniquely positioned to drive innovation and support companies in prototyping and testing MEMS-based solutions.

For over 40 years, CSEM has played a pivotal role in Neuchâtel’s economy and innovation ecosystem, employing 660 professionals across Switzerland, with a strong presence in microtechnology and ultra-low-power electronics. Covering 16 deep-tech fields, from artificial intelligence to renewable energy, CSEM continues to strengthen Swiss industry and solidify Neuchâtel’s status as a leading innovation center.
